“Now, with this help, I feel less alone. I feel like someone cares about us,” his mother said.

Zef is the youngest of six children. His family is newly enrolled in Mission Without Borders’ family sponsorship program. Their mother, Fatjona, works full-time as a cleaner in a tailoring factory, doing all she can to support her children on a very limited income.
“I left my husband because of violence,” Fatjona said. “It wasn’t easy to start again, but I did it for my children. They deserve peace and a future.”
Daria lives in a small rural village in Romania, where opportunities are limited. School opens up a bigger world for her. She likes practicing her writing and math. Her notebooks are neat, and her work is careful.
When asked what her favorite subject is, she smiled and said, “I like math and... everything else.”
But for families like Daria’s, school can be hard to reach. Schooling in Romania is officially free, but there are still hidden costs, including notebooks, textbooks, transport, and classroom supplies. For families already struggling to get by, those costs can be overwhelming.
Daria’s mother, Viorica, knows that struggle well. She lost her sight several years ago, despite multiple surgeries. Daria’s father had gone abroad for work and died suddenly in March 2024. The family couldn’t afford to bring him home.
